Welcome to the National Year of Reading and to our School Library Service celebration of the power of words to change, enrich and add pleasure to life. During this year we want every child to know the joys of reading.
This will be a hugely successful and rewarding year for working together,
and a wonderful opportunity to promote reading for pleasure in your school.
We would love to help and SLS can visit your school to support your activities with:-
Reading Roundabout (20KB PDF): an energetic, enjoyable activity to introduce your pupils to a variety of genres and authors, encouraging book-based conversations.
NYR fun activities - some great ideas to start you off
Looking for something to enthuse, amuse and encourage reading? Then our Go reading! CD might be the answer.
Get parents on board with our well-received pack:
Reading begins at home – how to make it fun for everyone
‘Parental involvement in their child’s reading has been found to be the most important factor in the development of their language and literacy.’
Reading Allowed : your pupils love hearing you read stories to them and this is the year to make more time for it. We can suggest some new and exciting titles that just beg to be shared.
Read, Ride & Relax – photo competition for children over 5 to adults run by Devon Library Service / Travelwise. Your photo of someone reading on any form of transport could win you a digital camera! Entry forms from your school, public library or the website. Closing date 30th June.
